Bye Bye Blackbird

An exploration of Jazz and Cinema

Dec 21
In 1959, the height of his career, Sonny Rollins left the jazz scene to improve his tone and musical abillity. This was because Rollins was dissatisfied with the way that he was playing and believed that he needed to practise his saxophone further to introduce new ways of playing. This sabatical was a risky choice because if he left the popularity behind, he may not have been able to return to the same succesful career. Despite this, Sonny Rollins took his Saxophone to the williamsburg bridge (because he didn’t have a private place to practise) every day and busked. After three years, he returned, producing ‘the Bridge,’ his comeback CD, which is still believed as one of the most Iconic albums in all of Jazz history.
